about

Surface Level is an emotional song for me. I wrote it to process the end of a friendship, while I was also at a point of being very single and feeling loneliness. The song became a way for me to manifest deep love in my life, the kind that goes beyond surface level, inviting in the kind of love I was wishing for, craving for depth. I think writing this song helped me start to find that kind of love with myself, cultivating deep self love which helped me allow more of that kind of love from others into my life.

It was recorded in both LA and NYC and features some beautiful guitar parts, both nylon and electric guitar by Jeff Fettig who also produced and mixed the upcoming album, on which Surface Level is the final track. The song also features dreamy backing vocals from Queens singer-songwriter Matt Sucich, a gorgeous string arrangement by Bryan Reeder and a quartet of amazing NYC-based strings players, as well as bass by LA bassist Wayne Whittaker and drums by Jonathan Smith, both of whom also play in my full band setup in LA. The result of all these talented artists collaborating really is a feeling of self love overflowing into the ability to give and receive love abundantly.

lyrics

I wanna do life with you,
Go wherever you ask me to.
Just as long as when we get there,
you stay near me and don’t move.
You give me all the light I need
when you smile back at me
Even if we’re busy stumbling
cause it’s too dark to see.

It’s not just surface level with us.
We go deep.
You pull me further into our love.
We go deep like it’s easy.

Our city was a funeral,
Trains dimmer than usual
Packed with dreamers pushed together ‘til the subway car was full.
Your voice stays with me though,
getting louder as it leads me home:
“Tell me everything about your day, babe, I wanna know.”

It’s not just surface level with us.
We go deep.
You pull me further into our love.
We go deep like it’s easy.
